King Saul’s son, Jonathan, was a close friend of David. But, because of Saul’s jealousy of David’s battle victories and the praise David received from the Israelites. David became a fugitive.
“Why does your father, Saul, want to kill me? What have I done wrong,” David asked Jonathan. “My father can’t be trying to kill you! He never does anything without telling me about it. Why would he hide this from me? It can’t be true!”
They worked out a plan where Jonathan would make an inquiry at dinner. Depending on the results Jonathan would return to David’s hiding place and under the pretense of archery practice, a signal would be provided as to David’s safety.
As David suspected, Jonathan learned that his father was planning to kill David; and at the risk of his own life, Jonathan warned David to flee for his life. [Bible: I Samuel 20:1-42]
