Seized by a tormenting spirit, King Saul hurled a spear at David, intending to pin him to the wall. What did David do to deserve this treatment? He was playing a musical instrument in an attempt to soothe King Saul’s spirit.
Saul was consumed with a jealousy regarding David’s ability to lead warriors in battle. The Israelites were singing praises to David and Saul felt threatened by David’s popularity.
Saul’s daughter, Michal, fell in love with David. In Saul’s mind this provided an opportunity to get rid of David. He told David, “I want you to lead an army against our enemy, the Philistines.” He thought David would be killed in battle. God was with David, however, and the Philistines were defeated.
David and Michal were married; but for the rest of his life, Saul attempted to kill David. God had other plans, for one day David would be the king of the Israelites. [Bible: I Samuel 18:1-30]
