“I’m wearing my old patched sandals and threadbare clothing because I’m going with other residents of Gibeon to try to get a peace treaty with Joshua, the leader of the Israelites. I’m, also, taking some moldy bread because I want him to think I’ve travelled a long distance. I’m doing all of this because I’ve heard that the God of the Israelites won’t let them sign a treaty with the Canaanites.”
Joshua made a treaty with the Gibeonites; but, three days later he learned that the Gibeonites were indeed neighbors; and had not travelled a long distance; but had set out to deceive the Israelites. If Joshua had asked God, he would have learned of the deception. [Bible: Joshua 9:1-27]
