“Jesus, you let your disciples eat without washing their hands. You know that they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat,” demanded the Pharisees.
“And why do you, by your traditions, violate God’s commandment to ‘Honor your father and mother’? You say to your parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you; for I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ In this way, you say I don’t need to honor my parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.”
Peter asked Jesus, “Explain the parable that says people are defiled by what they eat.” “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked. “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and is expelled by the body. But the words that are spoken come from the heart; which is the source of evil thoughts. This is what defiles a person; not eating with unwashed hands.” [Bible: Matthew 15:1-20]
