Near the evening of the dreadful day of the crucifixion, Joseph of Arimathaea, a wealthy member of the Sanhedrin, and a secret believer in Jesus, went to Pilate and requested permission to remove the body of Jesus from the cross. Upon receiving Pilate’s approval, the body of Jesus was wrapped in linen and placed into Joseph’s tomb. Several women, including Mary Magdalene, watched from a distance. Knowing the burial location, Mary Magdalene and another Mary returned to the tomb. They discovered that an angel had rolled the stone away from the opening. The angel spoke to them, saying, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen as He said. Come see the place where He had been laying. Then go, quickly, and tell His disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee.’”
