“Today is the Sabbath, let’s keep our eyes on Jesus, to see if he breaks the law,” the Pharisees said. The crowd grew and soon it became wall-to-wall, standing room only. This made it impossible for four men who were carrying a crippled man, on a mat, to get anywhere near Jesus.
“If we go up on the roof, we can make a hole in the roof and lower the mat down in front of Jesus,” one of the men said. This captured a lot of attention, from the crowd and Jesus. Impressed with both their action and their faith, Jesus said to the crippled man, “My friend, your sins are forgiven.”
With this, the Pharisees flew into a rage. “Who does he think he is, forgiving sins?” they asked. Jesus interrupted them by asking, “Is it easier for me to tell this crippled man that his sins are forgiven or to tell him get up and walk? But, now, so that you can see that the Son of Man can do either or both,” He said to the crippled man, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk home.” Immediately, the man stood up, picked up his mat and went home. [Bible: Luke 5:17-26]
