And Jesus was led by the Spirit into a lonely place…so lonely, that 40 days of fasting reduced the physical body to temptation by Satan. In a series of three statements, Satan said, “If you’re the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” To which Jesus replied, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from God.”
In the second statement, Satan said, “Throw yourself down from the pinnacle of the temple, for it is written that God shall give His angels charge concerning you and they will bear you up.” Jesus responded with, “The scriptures, also, say do not test the Lord your God.”
In the third statement, Satan showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, and said, “All these things I will give to you if you will worship me.” To this Jesus answered, “Go away, Satan! The scriptures say: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only Him.’” [Bible: Matthew 4:1-10]
