King Saul was obsessed with eliminating David, the person married to his daughter (due to David’s popularity with the Israelites). Saul received word that David and his warriors were hiding in a mountainous area. Saul formed a group of 3,000 men and set out for the suspected area. While they were camped, God caused a deep sleep to come over the king and his army.
David and one of his followers crept into the camp. David was unwilling to harm God’s anointed (Saul); but, to let Saul know that David spared his life, he removed the spear and bottle of water that were near his head.
When David was a safe distance away, he called to Saul and his Commander asking what he had done that caused Saul to hate him, reminding Saul that he spared Saul’s life because he was God’s anointed.
Saul realized his foolishness and asked David for forgiveness. [Bible: I Samuel 26:1-25]
