Having refused to accept Paul’s advice to remain in port, the pilot and owner of the ship soon encountered a storm that prevented the ship from maintaining the desired course. As the storm grew worse, all control of the ship was lost and they were swept at the will of the storm until they ran aground on the island of Malta. The surf from the storm continued to beat on the stern of the ship, breaking it to pieces.
