God instructed Moses to take a census of the Israelite community, listing all the males 20 years and older that were able to serve in the army. The numbers were grouped by tribes, not including the tribe of Levi. The total number was 601,730. None of this number, except Joshua and Caleb, were in the first census.
God instructed that land was to be allotted to the tribes and clans as an inheritance based on the names in the census, with a larger group receiving a larger inheritance and a smaller group a smaller inheritance. [Reflection based on the Bible Reference – Numbers 26:1-56]
