“Please, Your Majesty, help me!” the woman cried out to the king as he passed by on the city wall. “Let the Lord help you! I have neither food nor drink. What’s the matter anyway?” the king responded. Here’s what the woman answered: “Another woman and I were so hungry we agreed to eat our sons. Yesterday, we cooked and ate my son; but today when I went to her house to eat her son, she had hidden him.”
How could things have gotten so bad? The Syrian army had encircled the city of Samaria and they were allowing nothing to go in or out of the city gates.
