“Tell me brother, how is it with the Jews that have returned to Jerusalem?” Nehemiah asked. Hanani responded, “The captives that came back have all kinds of trouble. The conditions in Jerusalem are bad. Sections of the city are still in ruins, the walls around the city are broken down and the gates were burned with fire. The people living in Samaria and surrounding cultures threaten and bully the Jews in Jerusalem so that they live in shame and disgrace.” Nehemiah’s heart was moved with compassion for the Jews in Jerusalem; and for days he prayed to God for His help.
