King Balak of Moab, a puppet king of the defeated King Sihon, by the Israelites, was terrified at the presence of the Israelites. He devised a scheme, along with the Midianites to hire a sorcerer to put a curse on the Israelites. The sorcerer was a man by the name of Balaam, who had a reputation for being powerful at his craft.
