When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to Heaven, this was known to a group of prophets in Bethel and Jericho and by Elisha. At each stop, Elisha was tested when Elijah suggested that they separate with Elijah continuing alone. Elisha, however, was determined to remain with his mentor. In a conclusion arranged by God, a group of fifty prophets followed them to the edge of the Jordan River. There, Elijah struck the river with his cloak and the water parted. After Elijah and Elisha crossed on dry land, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I’m taken from you?” Elisha replied, “Let me inherit a double portion of your Spirit.” “Only if you see me when I’m taken from you, will your request be granted, Elijah said.”
Soon, after saying this, as they were walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated them and Elijah went up to Heaven; and Elisha saw him no more. Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak and walked to the Jordan River. There he struck the river with the cloak and the water parted. The company of prophets realized that God’s Spirit was resting on Elisha. [Reflection based on the Bible Reference – 2 Kings 2:1-15]
