Returning to His hometown, Nazareth, Jesus entered the local synagogue on the Sabbath. He offered to read the scripture and was handed a scroll containing the book of Isaiah. He turned to the section that read: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor…” Then He rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant; and He sat down. Everyone was looking at Him, expecting Him to say more. So, he continued by saying, “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled, in your hearing.” “But, isn’t He the son of Joseph, the carpenter?” some asked. “I tell you,” He continued, “A prophet is not accepted in his hometown.” The people were furious with Him and attempted, unsuccessfully, to throw Him off a cliff.
