God provided a path, for the Israelites, from a life of hardship and servitude under the Egyptian government to a land that was favorable for sustaining life. A land that would enable the Israelites to reflect God’s presence and power.
God told the Israelites to go in and possess the land. The Israelites wanted a scouting party to explore the strengths and weaknesses of this new land. God instructed Moses to select a leader from each of the tribes for the mission.
All twelve spies reported that the land was fertile; but, ten reported that the inhabitants were stronger; and they convinced the Israelites to turn back. As a result of this choice, the Israelites wandered in the wilderness for the next 40 years. [Bible: Deuteronomy 1:22, Numbers 13:1-33]
