An excerpt from "Biblical Counseling Coalition.org" entitled, "When Behavior Turns Demonic: Counseling Bitter Jealousy and Selfish Ambition from James3:13-18, Part 1" by Kyle Swanson, states: "If someone is operating with selfish ambition and bitter jealousy, meekness goes out of the window (v. 14). Selfish ambition has zero regards for holding back power and control over someone else for the sake of Christ. Bitter jealousy has no room for the feelings and good will of others. These attitudes and behaviors stand in opposition to each other. And the warning is that many Christians will attempt to justify their actions by falsely believing their selfish ambition or bitter jealousy is somehow vindicated by God’s Word! But James says that we must identify this marker in order to prevent false boasting in righteousness. He states that boasting falsely in truth is a self-righteous mask worn by those who are operating with ambitious behavior that is contrary to the good of others and those who operate with personal agendas rather than the agenda of their Father in heaven."
