The people of Judah made David their king. Abner, who had been the general of Saul’s army made Saul’s son, Ishbosheth, king of Israel. One day Abner and the soldiers of Ishbosheth met Joab, the leader of David’s soldiers, at a pool near Gibeon.
Abner yelled to Joab, “Let’s have some of our best soldiers get up and fight each other!” Joab agreed, and twelve of Ishbosheth’s men got up to fight twelve of David’s men. They grabbed each other by the hair and stabbed each other with their daggers. They all died right there! That’s why the place is called “Field of Daggers.” Then everyone started fighting. Both sides fought very hard, but David’s soldiers defeated Abner and the soldiers of Israel. [Bible: 2 Samuel 2:12-17]
