From Paul’s nephew, the Roman Commander learned that a mob of Jews, with the consent and support of their leaders, had put into action a plan of deception that would make him look weak and unable to secure a prisoner…a roman citizen, no less. If this plan succeeded and word got back to Rome, he could lose his position and maybe his life. It wasn’t going to happen on his watch. He ordered a detachment of two hundred soldiers, two hundred spearmen and seventy horsemen to transport Paul to Governor Felix in Caesarea under the cover of darkness.
