When the Jews were released from captivity in Babylon, there were mixed feelings about their relationship to God. There was a segment that advocated strict adherence to the laws of Moses. In an effort to maintain purity in their lifestyle, the leaders, called Pharisees added additional laws and restrictions. Another group of leaders, called Sadducees, were wealthy, powerful and politically motivated. Life for the average Jewish family was not easy; but, the promise they heard in the temple was that a Messiah would come.
