Belshazzar’s grand and festive revelry was interrupted by a hand, writing a message on a wall, for the king and all to see. The meaning of the message was unknown; but, Belshazzar had this ominous feeling that it was not good. When none of the wise men and magicians could determine the meaning, the queen-mother, wife of a former deceased Babylonian king, was notified of the problem. She arrived at the gathering and reminded Belshazzar that King Nebuchadnezzar had received interpretations from a divinely-inspired man of God, named Daniel.
Daniel was called and appeared before Belshazzar. He began by reciting the experience of Nebuchadnezzar and how God had enabled him to become a great and powerful leader and assemble a massive empire; but Nebuchadnezzar became proud and convinced himself that his accomplishments were by his own ability. God displayed his power to Nebuchadnezzar, who was made to lose his sanity and live with animals and eat like animals, until he recognized God’s power.
Now, Daniel stated, “God’s power will be displayed. The days of this kingdom have been numbered and are ended. The kingdom will be divided between the Medes and the Persians; and you, Belshazzar, have been found unworthy.” [Reflection is based on the Bible Reference – Daniel 5:1-30]
