Adonijah, Solomon’s older brother, approached Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, with a request. He asked Bathsheba to request approval from Solomon for Abishag, a Shunammite to be his wife. Abishag, however, was the concubine of the deceased King David. In the ancient Near East, to claim the concubine of a deceased King was to claim the throne. Solomon understood that Adonijah had not abandoned his desire to be the king and if allowed to continue would result in a rebellion among the Israelites. Adonijah’s plotting cost him his life.
