THE TREASURERD HAIR CLIP
It was the first Friday in December. Lauren, our five-year old granddaughter was spending the night. We bundled up with coats, hats, and gloves as we prepared to take our two labs for a run in the grass field behind our house late that afternoon. I headed out with Lauren close behind. As I neared the end of the property line I turned suddenly to hear Lauren sobbing. As I approached her she said that she had lost her hair clip. We looked for it, of course, but I knew finding it was going to be like finding a needle in a haystack. The field was about an acre of shin high grass and she didn’t know where she dropped it. I told her it was no big deal; it was only a hair clip. I would buy her another one. But she told me it was a special treasure. She had found this hair clip at Myrtle Beach this past summer on vacation. Lauren is our treasure queen. She collects all kinds of little things. She could not be consoled. We looked but I was certain we would not find it.
Fast Forward to Sunday morning of that same weekend: I am walking the dogs again in the grass field behind our house. I am thinking and praying about the Sunday School Lesson I will share with the youth that particular morning. How much the Lord loves us. He knit each of us in our mother’s womb. The very hairs on our heads are numbered. He loves us so very much. He cares about all things small and large. The hair clip comes back to my mind. I’m thinking, how wonderful would it be, Lord, to find Lauren’s hair clip and share this story with the youth this morning to show how much you love and care even about the small things in our lives. If it is your will Lord. I continue walking a short distance searching the ground. I stretch my neck backward and continue walking. Looking down again, I continue toward the house. And then I gasp. It takes my breath away. Looking down, there it is—Lauren’s hair clip.
How can it be? The odds of finding that hair clip were next to impossible. Without God, that is!! I thank Him for finding the clip. Not that it was valuable, but that He cared enough about the little things. That he provided a story to share with the youth that fit right in with their lesson that day. A story that I can share with Lauren about the kind of God we have. A God that cares about little things; and if he cares about little things, how much more he will care about big things—loving and guiding us through all things.
I wrote this story down for two reasons. One, so I would remember it in years to come. Two, so I could share it—for the greatest treasure of all is having Jesus in your heart! ~K. G.
