The murder of Abel began with a thought by Cain. The thought that his brother’s sacrifice to God was acceptable and his was not, affected his emotions. His feelings progressed from disappointment to jealousy; then anger and finally murder.
If Cain thought eliminating his brother would solve the problem, he was wrong. The consequences were far worse.
